I’ve been collecting 4K Blu-ray discs for years now, and pretty much everything I buy is in the format if it’s available. I value having the best quality that I can get, and that’s what a 4K Blu-ray disc offers. The downside to this is that it’s the most expensive format on the market by a good margin. DVDs are almost dirt cheap in comparison, but there’s a significant drop in visual and audio quality on those discs when compared to the 4K counterparts.
There’s nothing inherently wrong if you still enjoy picking up a DVD, and the price is a huge factor in that. In fact, I’d say that’s the biggest difference I’ve noticed in making the leap from cheaper physical media to expensive 4K discs. Even the difference from regular Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray is a big jump. Websites like GRUV frequently run deals, and at the time of this writing, there’s a 3 for $33 deal for three Blu-rays, so you’ll see more frequent sales, and sales at a lower price than what you see from the 4K format.
Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray both look excellent, and while 4K has the benefit of a higher resolution and HDR, I’m not sure how much that matters to the average person. A lot of people have their TV placed far enough away from their couch where the resolution gain is negligible, and if that’s you, you might get more value out of a regular Blu-ray disc.

The price of 4K is a major deterrent
I understand wanting a cheaper alternative
The cost of everything has been going up lately, so it’s not really a secret that people have to cut back in certain areas. What I’ve noticed is that I’ve slowed down significantly with new 4K releases. I still pick up things during specific sales, and the 4K Troy from Arrow is something I snagged from Barnes and Noble for $25, but deals like those aren’t always running. I find major studio releases tend to cost $35, and I just don’t want to pay that for a movie right now. It feels like sales in general aren’t as frequent as they used to be, and with fewer stores selling physical media, it’s not a good spot to be in as a consumer.
I have such a backlog of 4K films that I own that I could go years without buying anything new before I get through everything, but I’d still like to get more. What I’ve been doing more frequently is not really worrying about the format when I pick something up on sale. During the most recent Prime Day sale, I ended up getting Bugonia on Blu-ray instead of 4K due to the price difference between the two.
When it comes to physical media, I like the convenience of having something physically instead of tracking it down on a streaming service. Whether it’s on Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray isn’t the end of the world for me. While I’d prefer everything to be on 4K Blu-ray, if prices stay where they are, I can see myself adding more Blu-ray discs to the collection.

I don’t know about you, but when I sit down to watch a movie, I don’t think much about what resolution it’s in when it starts playing. On a recent plane ride, I watched Michael on a tiny pixelated screen on the back of an airplane seat, and I still got an enjoyable experience out of it. If a movie is good, I believe it’ll transcend whatever format you’re watching it in, and you’ll have a good time. I know I would’ve enjoyed it more at home with the Dolby Atmos soundtrack in full effect instead of something being stuck on some substandard stereo audio coming out of some cheap earbuds.
Blu-ray quality is still good enough for most cases. 1080p still looks great, and many (but not all) discs come with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack that takes advantage of my surround sound system. The biggest loss is having no HDR, but even that’s something I can put up with. Good HDR can enhance a movie, but it’ll never turn a bad one into a good one. People like to use Gemini Man as an example of a stunning 4K disc, but that’s strictly in terms of how it looks instead of how good it actually is. I like HDR as much as the next person, but I would sweat it if I’m able to save $20 on a disc.
