Commonwealth Bank has been slammed after footage emerged of a worker refusing to accept cash from a customer.
The customer filmed the incident on his phone after he tried to hand over several $50 notes to pay down a debt.
The CBA worker told the customer he would need to download the bank’s app instead and make the transfer.
‘I have no way of transferring it to you guys. I want to give you money. I want to make what’s right with you guys. You won’t accept my money,’ he said.
‘So you’re happy to give me money, but now you won’t take it back. I’m trying to repay my debt with you guys and you won’t take it. What am I meant to do?’
‘I can record your feedback on this, but I cannot accept your cash,’ the bank worker responded.
The customer explained he did not have the means to transfer the money online, prompting the worker to offer to help him deposit the money.
She said she could not take the money on his behalf.

‘You’re the bank. You’re meant to be the teller… You’re open. I don’t understand,’ the man said.
Footage of the interaction was shared online where social media users quickly vented their anger.
‘How can a bank refuse to take legal tender? How are the elderly meant to bank if they don’t use a smart phone or own a computer?’ one said.
‘What has the world come to when you can’t bank your money at the bank? Just asking for a friend what the banks do now?’ another added.
A CBA spokesman said customers could still make deposits over the counter.
‘CBA’s cash services remain unchanged. Customers can continue to access cash deposit services in our branches through our tellers and ATMs using their CommBank app or card,’ he told news.com.au.
‘Non-CBA customers are not required to download the CommBank app to deposit funds into a CBA customer’s account. They can continue to transfer funds directly to a CBA account through their own financial institution.
‘Additionally, QR Cardless is a fast, safe, and free digital alternative for non-CBA customers wishing to deposit cash at a CBA ATM into a CBA account.’
