King Charles III is setting the record straight.

After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle—who stepped back from their duties as senior royals and relocated to California in 2020—returned to the United Kingdom for extended stay with their kids Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, the 77-year-old confirmed that there is “no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

“Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used,” Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon wrote in a letter sent to multiple outlets Sept. 7, noting that “The King has directed that the following information be shared.”

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” he continued. “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

Elsewhere in the memo, Benyon—who has been serving as the head of the Royal Household since 2024—reiterated that Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, “stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family.”
