Jan Bartek – AncientPages.com – The Viking Age settlement of Birka on the island of Björkö in Sweden has long interested archaeologists. But not all archaeological discoveries can be made through traditional excavations, which is why scientists rely on LiDAR, Ground-Penetrating Radar, and aerial photographs to detect archaeological features that would otherwise go unnoticed without sophisticated modern tools.

Using radar, scientists have now discovered unknown burial mounds and other large structures at Birka, and the investigation is now focused on determining what lies beneath the ground. Could it be a Viking ship related to the burial mounds, or something entirely different?
