Woman, 62, dies after Audi that had been chased by police for six minutes crashed into her car

A mother who was left fighting for her life after a teenager crashed into her during a six-minute police chase has tragically died.

Karen Joseph, 62, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries after 19-year-old Roman Kalas ploughed into her white Ford Puma on Warwick Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, at around 5.40pm on August 24.

Mr Kalas, who was driving a black Audi A3, died at the scene, with his initial cause of death given as traumatic head and chest injuries following a post-mortem.

Mrs Joseph tragically died in hospital last Friday -while her daughter, who was a passenger in the car, sustained minor injuries.

Warwickshire Police officers had pursued Mr Kalas for around six minutes before he crashed.

After reviewing dashcam footage, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) today confirmed the officer began the pursuit – with sirens and emergency lights on – after Mr Kalas refused to stop for police in Birmingham Road.

It comes after two police officers were killed when five young men in a Volkswagen Passat smashed into their police vehicle while driving the wrong way down the A66, near Middlesbrough. The group of five, who had earlier been pursued by police, also died at the scene.

IOPC Director Derrick Campbell said: ‘Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends and everyone affected by the deaths of Roman Kalas and Karen Joseph.

‘We have spoken with both families to advise them of our investigation, and they will be provided with regular updates. They have requested privacy at this difficult time.

‘Given two members of the public have died in an incident involving a police pursuit, it’s important that an independent investigation is carried out to establish the full circumstances.’

Inquests into the deaths of Mrs Joseph and Mr Kalas will open tomorrow.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
