Chris Evans has recently shared how hard it was to keep his Avengers return a secret. Marvel Studios has built an empire on masterclass secrecy, but keeping Chris Evans’ anticipated return as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday under wraps demanded a whole new level of espionage. Beyond the studio’s trademark locked scripts, NDA-heavy contracts, and closed sets, the ultimate line of defense apparently came down to pure deception. It is a high-stakes game of Hollywood cat-and-mouse that highlights just how far the studio will go to protect its biggest MCU legacy moments.

Now that the storm has passed, Chris Evans has finally revealed the intensity with which the secret was being kept at the Marvel headquarters. 

Chris Evans on how Marvel kept his return a secret

Chris Evans recently admitted that preserving the massive cinematic surprise for Avengers: Doomsday meant he had to flat-out lie to fans and reporters about his involvement in the crossover event. During the recent FAN EXPO Boston event, the Captain America actor talked candidly about the mystery surrounding his comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, disclosing that Marvel took extra precautions to keep his role from becoming public during production.

“Really tough. Really tough. We filmed in London, and I rented a house an hour away from the studio on the other direction from London” Evans said when asked how tough it was to keep his involvement a secret, emphasizing the precautions he took to stay hidden. They would just go to the studio and then straight home – no deviations, no detours. This was the level of secrecy that Marvel operated in during the filming, Evans revealed. 

  He also revealed during the FAN EXPO Boston conversation that the Doomsday draft did not even refer to his character as Steve Rogers. Instead, in honor of another well-known character, Marvel assigned him the moniker “Luke Cage.” According to reports, the fictitious name was employed as an extra degree of security in the event that production information leaked outside the studio.

The first question that comes after hearing this revelation is: why was all this secrecy necessary?

Given the potential significance of Steve Rogers’ return, the secrecy makes logical sense. In 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Evans seemed to have finished his MCU tale when Steve went back in time to return the Infinity Stones before deciding to stay in the past with Peggy Carter. Later, Sam Wilson received the Captain America shield from an aging Steve. One of the most enigmatic aspects of Doomsday is how Steve actually makes a comeback after such a satisfying farewell.

One of the biggest groups of Marvel characters ever put together is already being touted as the main draw of the film.

Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and a number of returning members of Fox’s X-Men franchise are all in the movie alongside Evans. The effort made to conceal Evans’ involvement indicates that his comeback is significantly more meaningful than a brief sentimental visit.
