Much like the Green Lanterns, the Violet Lanterns are another powerful corps and are hailed as one of the strongest of the nine. They, too, draw their power from the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. However, while the Green Lanterns take on the green power of will, the Violet Lanterns draw on another powerful, yet sometimes unstable, emotion that is one of the most powerful in every universe.
These Violet Lanterns are also known as the Star Sapphire Corps. And they are both antagonists and allies to the Green Lanterns that appear in the newest HBO series, Lanterns. Now, whether the Star Sapphires appear in the series or not, it might be worth understanding the corps and their origin.
What is Star Sapphire
The story of the origin of the Star Sapphires goes billions of years back, when a group of female Oans decided to separate from the Guardians of the Universe. This was because they did not wish to get rid of all of their emotions to focus on one and settled on Zamaron. Now, in this new place, the ex-Guardians came across a parasitic crystal and formed the Star Sapphire gem.
It could possess its host and help them spread love, but it also had enough power to seek revenge and twist the emotion of love. However, after an encounter with Hal Jordan, where he urged the Zamarons to rethink the gem’s influence and how it was dangerous and difficult to control, they realized and sought a safer way to wield the violet light of love. They eventually transformed the gem’s power into Star Sapphire Rings and a Power Battery.

And following this, they formally created the Star Sapphire Corps. The ring allowed multiple individuals to wield the violet light without being possessed. Now, one of the most notable women to be possessed by the gem several times and become the Star Sapphire was Carol Ferris. She is also Hal Jordan’s on-and-off love interest and is expected to appear in the HBO series.
Now, these rings also granted several abilities to its users.
Power of Star Sapphire
After the Zamarons realised that the Star Sapphire gem was too dangerous, they formed the Star Sapphire Ring. This became the primary weapon used by members of the Star Sapphire Corps. It channels the violet light of love and grants several abilities to its users.

Their powers include flight, space travel, and fire energy blasts. It can create constructs based on the user’s thoughts and emotions and also protects its users against physical damage. One of the interesting details is that the Star Sapphire members are mostly women.
Are there only women in Star Sapphire
The Star Sapphire Corps is currently composed entirely of women. However, interestingly, men can also use the ring. As seen in The War of the Green Lanterns, Guy Gardner briefly wielded a Star Sapphire ring alongside a Red Lantern ring to boost his powers. While he was able to use the ring, it proved difficult to control, as he had to balance two opposing emotions at once. More about the Star Sapphire will be found out if the Corps are explored in HBO’s new series, Lanterns.
