Finding the right smart TV for your home can be a difficult task, and perhaps the first of many choices to make involves the screen type. There are basically two main options available: an OLEDscreen or an LED screen. In the simplest of terms, you’re opting for perfect contrast or potentially incredible color.

I tested out Micro RGB R95H smart TV by Samsung, a unit that falls into the latter category, with an LED screen featuring dimming zones backed by a powerful processor. I’ve long been a proponent of OLED TVs, but as one of Samsung’s top offerings this year, I was compelled to find out if there was something better out there for me. Here’s what I found out.

The Micro RGB R95H is a 2026 4K Samsung smart TV featuring the Tizen operating system. Notably, it features new micro RGB panels that allow for more focused bursts of light instead of the wide net cast by a standard backlight panel. It boasts a 165Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ video format, and Dolby Atmos audio. The model includes four HDMI ports, including an eARC as well as the latest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

It comes packed with a load of AI features that are meant to better calibrate your viewing experience while adjusting audio and video on the fly. The big draw is the new Micro RGB AI Engine Pro processor, which optimizes for color depth, brightness, and accuracy, with processing features designed to immerse the viewer. The model also includes a suite of gaming features as well as Filmmaker Mode.

What I liked about the Samsung Micro RGB R95H Smart TV

Stunning color and fast processing

The Micro RGB sets out what it advertises to do and that’s create bright, bold, and rich colors. From animated features to Marvel movies to Avatar to video games and live sports, I was impressed by how vivid and textured all the colors on screen felt. Such colorful titles looked great in a dark room while also holding up in a brightly-lit environment during the day. Along with the color, the brightness of the TV is most impressive, and for those who tend to watch TV during the day, or anyone who really wants to be immersed in color, there is plenty to like about this model.

Across the titles I watched, I didn’t notice any halo effects or blooming; not only was the color bright and vivid, but it was crisp and well-defined. I could watch an endless marathon of Pixar movies and be entranced.

I continue to enjoy Tizen as an operating system. It’s fast, clean, and allows for some customization to make sure your home screen works for you. I typically adjust a bunch of settings when I first check out a new TV, and I recommend you do the same in order to remove some pesky ads and autoplay features. Set-up is fast and easy, and it shouldn’t take too long before you’ve downloaded your favorite apps and logged in.

Gamers will be suited to this model as well, as it features a host of gaming options designed to optimize play depending on the genre and your personal preferences. There are four HDMI slots as well, plenty for your gaming console, soundbar, and perhaps Blu-ray player. The slim design and virtually non-existent bezels create an immersive viewing experience; I highly recommend mounting on a wall.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed checking out the ambient modes and art gallery option. You don’t need a frame-style TV to enjoy iconic paintings on your TV. This model comes with Samsung’s robust art collection; you can enjoy some free options, but a subscription is required to gain access to everything. The color prowess of this model makes the artwork particularly compelling.

What I didn’t like about the Samsung Micro RGB R95H Smart TV

Annoying AI features and concerns around contrast

While the color and brightness looked great, it took a while to get there. And I do believe some aspects of the viewing experience suffer. The TV doesn’t look great out of the box; cooler color temperatures mean the image leans too blue, which for me is very distracting. You’ll need to play around with the settings once you have your unit set up. And you may want to alter it depending on what you’re watching.

Similarly, I don’t care for the AI features, especially the picture personalization options that allow you to supposedly craft an image to your liking that the TV will adhere to in the future. Basically, you go through a series of photo options and select your preference with regards to color, sharpness, and brightness. My main problem with this is that these calibrations are based on a series of images that are random; you don’t know how they’re supposed to look, and your personal preference may significantly alter how a movie is shown to you later. I didn’t feel this feature,or any of the other image adjustments were that good. I was happy with Filmmaker Mode, but I often felt I was playing around with the picture settings based on what I was watching.

I did find some of the preset picture modes and that the AI customization feature did not create the best image across titles. Older cable comedies and some TV dramas didn’t look authentic; some skin colors felt unnatural and there were some shadows in the darkness. It took a fair bit of tinkering to find the best look.

My main concern is contrast and cinematic fidelity. I’m a pretty staunch supporter of OLED TVs and the infinite contrast ratio that comes with it. As someone who watches a lot of so-called prestige television and director-driven films, I highly prioritize contrast and being able to discern shadows in the darkness. I will say the contrast was quite good with this TV; there are mini-dimming zones that allow small sections of the screen to adjust light on their own. But as good as it is, I’m still leaning toward the OLED TV.

Should you buy the Samsung Micro RGB R95H Smart TV?

For anyone who loves big, bold, vivid colors, and prioritizes that immersive experience that comes with color saturation, I’d absolutely recommend investing in this TV the central component to your home entertainment system. It supports the creation of an entire entertainment system, with its four HDMI ports, thin design for wall-mounting, gaming features, and Filmmaker Mode picture setting.

Still, I have some reservations, mainly because I opt for the best contrast over the best color and brightness. I would advise against relying on the automatic AI features to adjust your TV, and recommend familiarizing yourself with all the various settings and adjustments in order to get the best picture possible.
