Gaziano & Girling Celebrates 20 Years

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Gaziano & Girling, which is impressive, to say the least.

Gaziano & Girling are among, if not my favorite, shoemakers of all time. They have produced some of the most beautiful shoes the world has ever known, and anyone who has been reading The Shoe Snob for any meaningful amount of time probably knows how much admiration I have for the brand.

More importantly, I am very close with both Tony Gaziano and Dean Girling. They are like older brothers to me. They have done so much for me over the years, helped me in countless ways, and I genuinely love seeing the success that they have achieved.

And what a success it has been.

20 Years of Gaziano & Girling

Building a shoe brand is not easy. Building one at the level at which Gaziano & Girling operate is significantly harder.

They make some of the finest—and certainly some of the most beautiful—shoes in the world. They are also quite pricey shoes, let’s not pretend otherwise. Yet G&G has managed not only to survive for 20 years but to continually grow, evolve and strengthen its position within the upper echelon of men’s shoemaking.

That is a feat in itself.

There are plenty of shoe brands that have come and gone during those same 20 years. Making beautiful shoes is one thing. Creating a sustainable business around them, building a worldwide clientele and continuing to grow while remaining committed to your original standards is another thing entirely.

Tony and Dean should be immensely proud of what they have built.

In another 20 years, I suspect Gaziano & Girling will be viewed very differently. It will no longer simply be one of the great modern English shoemakers. It will have become what we traditionally call a heritage brand.

Tony and Dean may well be retired by then, with another generation running the company and carrying on what they created. And that, to me, is one of the greatest achievements any founder can hope for: creating something capable of outliving your own involvement in it.

For those of you exotic lovers out there, I have not seen it specifically stated whether every exotic leather is included, so don’t be afraid to ask. It may well be something they handle case by case.

And let’s face it, if there is ever a time you want 20% off an exotic Gaziano & Girling shoe, this is probably it. You might need the discount with those prices.

Well Deserved

Jokes aside, I am incredibly happy for Tony, Dean and the entire team at Gaziano & Girling.

They are some of my favorite people in the world. I love supporting them, I love seeing them doing well, and I am proud of them for surviving the difficult periods that every independent business inevitably goes through and coming out the other side bigger and better.

Twenty years is no small milestone.

And I look forward to the next 20, when hopefully we’re all retired from shoes, sitting somewhere with a drink in hand, looking back at all of the ups and downs we went through and toasting the fact that somehow we made it through.
