Job Interview? Bring Your Tablet

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter suggests bringing your tablet to an interview especially if you are in a creative field.

Career Reinvention

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff for organizations for more than 40 years. I remember when I started in recruiting and would interview people and eventually they get to the part of the interview where they want to show something off that they had done.

So, they’d reach into their briefcase, pull out this huge binder of material, show me flowchart after flowchart of a computer system that they designed and I’d be sitting there with my eyes glazed over as they thumb through and try and show me things. Remember, these are the days of text and pure text and the occasional chart. It was horrible and I had no interest whatsoever.

Now, let’s fast forward to now and, you know, instead of bringing the book to the interview to show off what you’ve done, if you’re in a creative area, if you do work that’s somewhat artistic where visual is much more important than content or or visual is the reason you’re being hired, come with a tablet to your interview. Have it set up for a presentation so that all you have to do is hand your tablet to the interviewer and be prepared to talk about what they’re seeing. Handing a tablet, handing your tablet to someone and allowing them to scan through at their pace about what they’re interested in that you’re doing and asking you questions about it is incredibly powerful.

You know, just remember, you have the opportunity with the presentation to be extremely creative to show things in imaginative ways and instead of boring people with those relatively flat shots, remember you can have hyperlinks to give people an idea of where it was implemented to. So, again, come with a tablet to the interview. Hand it to the interviewer.

Make sure you take it back at the end, of course. Doesn’t matter what standard it is. Just have it set up so as soon as it’s opened up, it goes directly to the presentation.
