“Two years ago, about 10 of us very foolishly decided to take over this marina because it was in some financial trouble,” he explained to E!. “So we took it over with a very firm mandate of like, ‘How do we, in the greatest city on earth, with its greatest asset being water, and that water being so inaccessible to people, how do we make it accessible to everyone, to those who wouldn’t think of it, who think they can’t afford it?’”

The result, partnering with Brunswick Corporation—the company behind major boat manufacturers like Boston Whaler, Sea Ray and more—to create programs that broaden opportunities to be on the water, including a youth sailing club.

He noted, “There’s another one called Brooklyn Boat Works—which we’re in about 15 schools now—whereby a boat kit is sent to the school, and the kids take a year to build the boat, and then they come down to the marina and they launch it and learn how to sail.”

“And then with that, we partner with people like the Billion Oyster Project about water stewardship, about passing on clean waters to the next generation,” continued. “So we’re trying to integrate a multifaceted kind of approach to the several versions of what it can mean to be water accessible.”
