Thousands of new free movies and TV shows are now on demand via Google TV Freeplay ‣ Diverse Daily

It now seems like every major company has launched its own streaming service, but they’re not all the same. Big brand names like Netflix and Disney+ charge subscribers a monthly fee to stream. Though they give users access to original content as well as classic films and TV shows, subscription prices have skyrocketed over the years, with some platforms now offering plans that cost nearly $30 a month.

People have naturally begun exploring solutions and finding other places to watch their favorite films and TV shows. Unsurprisingly, streaming platforms like Tubi, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel have thrived in recent years by offering viewers free, ad-supported content. And now, Google has done the same with a massive update to its streaming service: Google TV Freeplay.

On August 11, Cord Cutter News reported that Google TV Freeplay has added more than 10,000 movies and shows for users to watch on-demand, free of charge. For those who don’t mind the occasional ad break, Freeplay has delivered an extraordinary deal. All you need to start streaming is the most up-to-date software. This means you don’t need a subscription or to sign up for anything. You don’t even have to install an extra app. It’s all watch and no pay.

With Freeplay’s latest update, it now offers an “expansive library” of free, acclaimed titles from major studios like A24 and Lionsgate, according to Google. The list includes Oscar winners and beloved classics like Lady Bird, Seventeen Again, Begin Again, Point Break, and Labyrinth. It also includes hit shows like Hell’s Kitchen. On top of all that, Google announced that it will refresh Freeplay’s digital library “all year round,” ensuring that audiences have something new to watch.

Freeplay is available on all Google TV devices in the U.S., including Google TV Streamer and the Onn Google TVs sold at Walmart. Freeplay is also available on any other third-party box or device that runs on Google TV.

You can start looking through Freeplay by going to the Live tab on your Google TV home screen. You can even do it through your recommendations, or just select the Google TV Freeplay app.

“Whether you’re in the mood to watch a top-rated movie or want to catch up on the latest news, Google TV Freeplay has you covered. To start watching, open the Freeplay app from your Home screen and jump right in,” wrote Victoria Wen, Product Manager at Google TV.

What else is on Google TV Freeplay?

There’s no shortage of channels

Like Pluto TV, Google TV offers several channels that users can watch for free without the need for a subscription. Some of them focus on airing episodes of a specific TV series. Freeplay channels include Alfred Hitchcock Presents, BBC Earth, Classic Doctor Who, Murder, She Wrote, Murdoch Mysteries, and Top Gear.

Though Freeplay started out with 150 free channels in 2024, it has since grown to 316, with channels covering news, sports, reality TV, true crime, and more. More recently, Freeplay added 60 new channels to its digital library in July, including World of Love Island, Bloomberg TV+, Yahoo! Sports Network, and The Martha Stewart Channel.

Freeplay still doesn’t offer as many free movies and shows as Tubi, which has over 40,000, or Plex, which has over 50,000. Meanwhile, Roku’s total number of titles exceeds a whopping 80,000. Nevertheless, Freeplay still offers an enormous assortment of films and shows, with much more to come soon. And with no price for streaming, you couldn’t ask for a better deal.
