I’ve been watching a lot of Western movies lately, and if there’s one common theme I’ve found among some of my favorites, it’s that they all star the same leading actor: Clint Eastwood.
It’s no secret that Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood icon and one of the most legendary Western actors of all time. He’s perhaps most famously known for starring in Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy as the Man with No Name, which includes A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and, arguably the most memorable of the trilogy, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. But Eastwood also starred in a plethora of other Westerns, including Pale Rider and Unforgiven, the latter of which he both directed and starred in, winning two Oscars in 1993 for Best Director and Best Picture.
But if there’s one Clint Eastwood Western that I think is underrated and sometimes forgotten about when talking about his incredible career, it’s Hang ‘Em High.
Released in 1968 and directed by Ted Post, Hang ‘Em High stars Eastwood as Jed Cooper, a former lawman who survives a brutal lynching after being falsely accused of cattle theft and murder by a posse of vigilantes. After being rescued and appointed a US marshal, Cooper sets out to bring the men responsible for almost killing him to justice while struggling with his desire for revenge.
Fortunately, if you’ve never seen Hang ‘Em High, or it’s time for a rewatch, now’s the perfect time, as it’s now available to watch for free on this popular streaming platform.
