If there’s one genre of film I’m always trying to get my friends and family to give a chance, it’s Westerns. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good sci-fi flick or a comedy, but it’s hard to beat the grit and high-stakes morality that westerns bring to the table. And there have been a lot of outstanding Westerns released since the Golden Age of Hollywood.
A few that immediately come to mind are Tombstone, No Country for Old Men, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. However, while I love all of those movies, there’s one film in particular that stands out whenever I think of the genre, and it’s widely considered one of the best westerns of all time. I’m talking about The Magnificent Seven (1960).
Directed by John Sturges, The Magnificent Seven follows the story of a small Mexican village that has been repeatedly terrorized by a brutal bandit gang, leaving the villagers desperate and helpless. In a last-ditch effort to survive, the village seeks out and hires seven gunslingers to protect them and train them to fight back.
The Magnificent Seven features an unforgettable ensemble cast, including Yul Brynner as Chris Adams, Charles Bronson as Bernardo O’Reilly, Steve McQueen as Vin Tanner, and James Coburn as Britt.
If you’ve never seen The Magnificent Seven before, or could use a rewatch, this August is a great chance to do it, as it’s being added to this free streaming service.
