2026’s TV jargon war is a mess, but I’m here to explain what these technical terms really mean


Walk into a showroom this year, and the placards will ask you to choose between backlight architectures that nobody outside a display lab could explain unprompted. Samsung is selling Micro RGB, LG has Micro RGB evo, Hisense calls its version RGB Mini-LED, TCL sells both RGB Mini-LED and SQD Mini-LED, and Sony has trademarked True RGB for whatever it eventually launches.

Underneath the branding, though, these are the same three display families we’ve had for a couple of years now, and choosing between OLED, QLED, and mini-LED hasn’t gotten any easier with the renaming.

None of those acronyms answers the question you walked in with, which is whether the picture will look good in your room, in the light you actually have, on the nights you actually watch. Those have a few answers, but not one of them is a three-letter word.

The acronyms describe the backlight, not the picture

Two things can happen inside a 2026 TV. Either every pixel makes its own light, which is OLED, or a layer of liquid crystal sits in front of a backlight that shines through it, which is everything else. That’s the split, but it’s the only part of the jargon that changes what you see.

For years, the backlight for LCDs has been blue LEDs shining through a layer of quantum dots that convert that blue into red and green, which is what quantum dots do on your TV and what the Q in QLED has always meant. RGB mini-LED throws out the conversion step and uses separate red, green, and blue LEDs instead, which is why the case for RGB mini-LED over OLED rests on color rather than contrast.

SQD is TCL’s counter-proposal: keep the blue LEDs and the quantum dots, but make the dots better, and sidestep the color crosstalk that dedicated RGB backlights can introduce when a bright white object sits over a colored one. TCL’s argument for SQD mini-LED is that it gets most of RGB’s benefit without inheriting that particular problem.

QD-OLED sits outside that argument entirely. It’s a self-lit blue OLED panel with a quantum dot layer on top, and it’s been on sale long enough to be properly understood, turning up in Samsung’s S95H and Sony’s Bravia 8 II.

What 10,000 nits actually buys you

TCL’s X11L is marketed at 10,000 nits, and it can genuinely reach that figure — in ultra-short boost sequences on a 1% window, meaning a small bright square on an otherwise black screen. Every RGB and SQD flagship this year is sold on 100% coverage of BT.2020, the wide gamut used for cinema-grade content.

What none of these sets advertise, however, is full-screen brightness, and that’s the number that decides whether a sunlit room defeats you. Peak brightness describes a highlight: an explosion, a reflection off a car door, a window in the corner of the frame. Full-screen brightness describes a hockey rink, a snowfield, a daytime news studio. The X11L manages somewhere between 400 and 900 nits full-field depending on picture mode and who’s measuring.

Question one — how much light is in the room?

If your TV faces a window and most of your viewing happens before sunset, the LCD families win, and it barely matters which of them you pick. They are all bright enough, and modern anti-reflection coatings do as much work as raw output does. If you watch at night with the lights low, OLED’s black levels remain unmatched, and no rearrangement of the backlight changes that. OLED isn’t on its death bed simply because RGB turned up.

The gap has narrowed from both directions, though. Samsung’s S95H is roughly 30% brighter than last year’s model on a 10% window and nearly 20% brighter full-screen, and its matte finish handles glare better than it has any real right to. Meanwhile, the LCD sets have got better at black levels than they were three years ago, if not good enough to worry an OLED owner watching in the dark.

Question two — what’s on the screen most of the time?

Sports, daytime news, and anything you leave running in the background all point toward LCD, partly for the brightness and partly because static logos and score bugs are still the thing that gives OLED owners pause about how long a TV lasts. Films at night, letterboxed, in a dim room, point the other way. Most households sit somewhere between the two, which is why the answer to question one usually settles this one as well.

Question three — what is the acronym actually buying you?

LG’s flagship Micro RGB evo advertises more than a thousand dimming zones, while TCL’s X11L has 20,736. Both are premium 2026 sets from major brands, both wear a variation of the same three letters, but only one of those figures is in the same league as the other. Zone count is what governs blooming, the halo you see around a bright object on a dark background, and it’s the specification most likely to determine whether a set annoys you down the line.

Prices tell a similar story. The LG MRGB95 starts at $4,999.99 across its 75-, 86-, and 100-inch sizes. At 75 inches, Hisense’s UR9 matches it, and Samsung’s R95H undercuts both by $500, while at 100 inches, LG comes in $1,000 below Hisense. Then there’s the 65-inch UR9, listed at Best Buy for $1,999.99, which is the first time RGB backlighting has shown up at a size and price a normal household might seriously consider.

We predicted in January that sub-$1,000 RGB sets could take until 2027 or 2028, and that still looks about right, but the descent from the flagship tier has been quicker than the launch pricing implied.

And QD-OLED is no longer the automatic expensive option. Samsung’s S95H opens at $2,499 for the 65-inch and the step-down S90H starts at $1,399, which puts both underneath every flagship RGB set on sale.

So what should you do?

If I were buying this year, I’d walk past the placard and ask for two numbers the marketing never leads with: full-screen brightness in nits, and the dimming zone count for that exact screen size rather than the series. Those two will tell you more about how a TV behaves than any backlight architecture can.

After that, I’d check whether the set supports Dolby Vision 2 out of the box rather than via a firmware update someone has promised, because on a screen you intend to keep for a decade, the HDR standard is going to matter more than the thing lighting it.
