Master the Cover Letter: Smart Strategies to Craft a Powerful Cover Letter Win More Interviews and Land a Dream Job In an AI Era
Now, I see cover letters all the time, and first of all, people foolishly send them as a separate attachment. No one is ever going to open a separate attachment. They’re going to go right to the one that looks like it’s going to be a resume. Next, they make the mistake of going, “Dear Human Resources Manager,” or “Dear Recruiter,” or some generic intro like that. Don’t do that.
Number one: Put your cover letter into the body of an email so there’s no attachment necessary. Number two: Don’t address anyone. You know, once you’re sending “Dear So-and-So,” and you don’t know who it is, and you’re using this generic intro, it gives the impression like this is a form letter. Don’t do it. Third: Three paragraphs. First one is an intro—why you’re sending this. The second one is to lay out what it is about your background that you think fits what they’re looking for. Third, you do a closing. Closing should be something along the lines of when you’re going to follow up. So, “If I don’t hear from you, I’d like to give you a call day after tomorrow to see if you might be interested in scheduling an appointment.” Real simple.
