I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff for organizations for more than 40 years.
Today, I want to just talk with you about the best way to get an interview, and it really isn’t difficult. And I want to give you context.
If you want to be referred to a product or service, and you’ve done some research and you’ve got to make some choices, often what do you do? Well, I’m not talking about flipping a coin because that’s really what applying to a job board is. It’s flipping a coin.
What I’m talking about is you talk to friends, colleagues, business associates, people that you know, who you trust and rely on, and get some input, and then you make a decision. Now, in interviewing, you can do much the same thing, or in getting an interview, you can do much the same thing.
Let’s say you hear about a job opening, and what can you do? Answer: friends, colleagues, associates who you know who might be able to provide you with an introduction into the firm. Now, let’s work with the assumption that not everyone you know is going to know about the firm that you’re talking with, or you want to talk with.
Why not just go to LinkedIn? Why not find someone there who you can connect with and see if they can provide you with an introduction? After all, many of these people get employee referral bonuses if they refer someone who’s hired. Now, they’re not going to do you a solid just because you asked them for it. You have to demonstrate that you have experience, knowledge, and skills that are suitable, but let’s assume that you do.
Do you think it’s better to go into the great abyss of the applicant tracking system, or number two, get referred by someone who works there, or number three, contact the hiring manager yourself and try and get entry? Two and three are clearly the better choice, and the likelihood of you getting through the third choice, it exists, you should try that, but you have a much larger target audience if you also do number two.
