Josh Hartnett’s next Netflix project does not waste time getting under your skin. The official teaser just dropped, and it is clear something’s deeply wrong long before the show explains what. There is no easing into this one, and Netflix clearly wants people talking before the premiere even airs. Between the footage and a batch of new cast confirmations, Below finally has enough locked in to sketch out what’s coming this fall: cast list, premiere date, and all.
Here is the full cast lineup and the release date Netflix confirmed.
Meet the cast behind Netflix’s Below
Josh Hartnett leads Below as Calvin Penney, with Charlie Heaton playing his son Wade and Mackenzie Davis playing Fonda, a marine biologist who joins Calvin partway through. Ruby Stokes and Rohan Campbell round out the Penney family as Mary and Jay, and Natasha Henstridge and Joshua Close fill out the rest of the cast.
The series was shot entirely on location in Newfoundland. The crew filmed real ocean scenes alongside the Coast Guard instead of relying on green screen, and creator Jesse McKeown built the whole project around his own connection to the province.

The teaser dropped July 28, giving the first real look at Calvin facing off against whatever’s stalking his village. The trailer leans on unease rather than loud scares, and McKeown says that tone took shape from the setting.
“It’s such a unique landscape and so rugged, dangerous, isolated, and scary in a lot of ways,” McKeown tells Tudum, “But then there’s also this other side to it — the community is so warm, and the people are so funny, and there are many eccentricities about the place.”
Cast and setting are set, and Below already has a premiere date on the books.
When does ‘Below’ premiere? Netflix locks in the release date
Below premieres globally on Netflix October 8. Before that, it gets a world premiere in the Primetime program at the Toronto International Film Festival, which isn’t a typical stop for a straight-to-streaming show.
For anyone stacking their weekly Netflix watchlist, Below is worth marking down early. October tends to get crowded with horror releases aimed at the Halloween crowd, but this one arrives with a real festival stamp behind it, so it’s not likely to get buried.
What is Netflix’s Below about? Inside the creature terrorizing a Newfoundland village
The premise of Below follows Calvin, a fisherman trying to protect his family and his community after a mysterious creature starts terrorizing the coastline. His son Wade develops symptoms nobody in the village can explain, and Fonda becomes the one person capable of tracing what’s actually causing it. Newfoundland’s isolation works as part of the threat here, not just the backdrop. Davis describes her chemistry with Hartnett as unlike anything she’s done before.

Something’s clearly hiding below the surface here, and it is not planning on staying hidden. That same tension between mystery and dread carries the rest of Below’s premise, watching how far a tight-knit town will go once something starts trying to pull it apart.
Between a cast that’s fully bought in and a plot that treats the ocean itself as the real antagonist, Below is shaping up as one of Netflix’s more grounded creature thrillers. It’s less interested in cheap scares than in watching a close community find out how little control it actually has.
