Wonder Man’s cancellation blindsided nearly everyone involved, and now showrunner Andrew Guest is opening up about exactly what happened behind the scenes. Just months after Disney+ renewed the critically acclaimed Marvel series for a second season, the studio abruptly reversed course, leaving cast, crew, and fans stunned.

The news broke suddenly, with no public warning signs, and it hit especially hard given how rare a Season 2 renewal is for Marvel’s live-action Disney+ slate. Guest has now stepped forward to clear up the confusion, addressing fan theories and setting the record straight on what actually happened internally.

Why Wonder Man was really cancelled

In a video posted to TikTok, Andrew Guest addressed the fallout directly, telling viewers “I feel how you all feel” while working to correct the growing speculation online. He was firm that the cancellation was not a publicity stunt, and pushed back on rumors suggesting a Wonder Man movie was quietly being developed instead of a second season. Guest also shut down suggestions that scheduling conflicts involving director Destin Daniel Cretton or any other creative were to blame for the reversal.

According to Guest, contracts had already been signed and schedules cleared for Season 2, with the writers’ room originally set to begin this month and production expected to start early next year. Instead, sources say the writers’ room never actually opened, and the writers who had been attached to the project have since been released to pursue other work. 

Guest said the decision ultimately came down internally between Disney and Marvel, who determined the renewal no longer made sense for the company, despite it having made sense only a few months earlier. Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has since broken his silence on the cancellation as well, choosing to focus on the impact the show had on fans rather than dwelling on the disappointment.

The bigger picture behind the reversal

The cancellation is especially jarring given how well Wonder Man performed critically. The series holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for his performance as Simon Williams, marking Marvel Studios’ first major Emmy nod in five years. Streaming performance appears to have played a bigger role in the decision than critical reception, however, with the show making just one appearance on Nielsen’s streaming charts before dropping off entirely the following week.

With Loki and Daredevil: Born Again now the only live-action Marvel Disney+ series to have made it past a single season, Wonder Man’s reversal marks one of the more unusual outcomes in the franchise’s streaming history. There is still a silver lining for fans, though, as sources indicate the show’s characters, including Abdul-Mateen’s Simon Williams, could still resurface elsewhere in future Marvel projects, even without a second season of their own.
