The M3GAN AI robot spinoff Soulm8te is proceeding as a straight-to-digital release after being taken off Universal’s theatrical schedule towards the end of last year. The first sci-fi horror movie of the franchise, M3GAN, made over $181 million at the box office globally after it debuted in theaters in 2023. However, M3GAN 2.0, its sequel, only made $39 million worldwide at the conclusion of its theatrical run after earning $10 million domestically at its June premiere. This major setback might be the reason behind a digital-only approach with the spinoff.

M3GAN spinoff SOULM8TE has officially arrived digitally

On August 1, 2026, the M3GAN spinoff Soulm8te landed on digital, expanding the universe beyond the M3GAN series. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment offers it for straight purchase or rental without any subscription or ads. The digital release was announced more than three weeks ago, and now the movie has finally arrived.

The movie’s official plot summary states that Soulm8te centers on a bereaved engineer who is assigned to test a brutal tech company’s new artificially intelligent android. However, she develops demands of her own as he tries to program her to be a really sentient soulmate, unleashing an unrelenting frenzy of well-planned chaos. 

Lily Sullivan (Evil Dead Rise, Monolith), David Rysdahl (Alien: Earth, Fargo), Claudia Doumit (The Boys, Where’d You Go, Bernadette), and Arty Froushan (Daredevil: Born Again, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale) are among the notable ensemble cast members of Soulm8te. James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan wrote the story for Soulm8te, which was directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother).

The spinoff makes great use of this ensemble cast, and the reviews it got suggest that the film has legs to stand out in the franchise.

Soulm8te manages to impress critics

Instead of focusing only on conventional horror clichés, critics and reviews emphasized the film’s psychological depth. Letterboxd reviewers commended the movie for striking a balance between tension and emotional relevance while embracing the sensual thriller genre with a nostalgic 1990s flavor. 

Even though the premise gets more and more corny, David Rysdahl and Lily Sullivan’s performances stand out for keeping the narrative rooted in plausible human feeling. Furthermore, some unsettling concerns about human reliance on technology and emotional attachment are raised by the AI’s developing emotional complexity in the movie.
