The ‘Lucky’ star explained how she gets back on track after a busy day on set

Annette Bening has a method to becoming herself again after a long day on set.

The decorated actress and Lucky star, 68, is detailing her favorite things to do after an intense day in character — especially one like the complicated crime boss, Priscilla, in her new Apple TV thriller.

“It’s very cathartic, getting to do some of these things. I really enjoyed it,” she tells PEOPLE. “But [afterward], I go home, watch baseball with my mom, who’s 97 and has a martini at 5:30. Now, I don’t have a martini, because I can’t handle it. But I have a glass of wine, sit, hang out, see my husband.”

When a busy day of shooting wraps, Bening says she prefers to take it “easy” and stay in the house. “My mom’s lived with me for a few years, and she’s a wonderful person,” she adds. “So just kicking back, especially after that kind of a day. But that’s been the case for so many years.”

Bening previously spoke about her connection with her mother, Shirley Bening, during a March interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, describing her as an “incredible person.” She also reiterated that Shirley lives with her and her husband, Warren Beatty.

“I lost my dad a few years ago, they were married 73 years, which is crazy,” Bening said. “She is a remarkable woman. She lives in her pajamas in my house and she does crossword puzzles and reads like a maniac. [She] often reads scripts of mine.”

At 5:30 p.m. sharp, Shirley enjoys a nice martini, but “only one,” Bening said. “She would rather have two, but I tell her one,” she jokes. “And potato chips, by the way.”

As for Bening’s latest role, it’s definitely worthy of watching with an afternoon martini. Based on author Marissa Stapley’s bestseller of the same name, Lucky follows Anya Taylor-Joy‘s titular character, whose “multi- million-dollar heist goes sideways.”

It also stars Timothy Olyphant, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Clifton Collins Jr. and Drew Starkey, who plays Priscilla’s son and Lucky’s love interest, Cary.

“It sounded like it was going to have a very stylish bent,” she added of her first impressions of the series. “So much of it, when you’re in a story, it’s like, what’s around you? How is it going to be fashioned around you? I knew it was Anya Taylor-Joy, and she’s so incredible. I mean, what a presence on screen, and Aunjanue Ellis and Tim Olyphant. I mean, it’s all about the people really… It just sounded kind of intriguing, and it was.”
