Controversial internet personalities Andrew and Tristan Tate have been arrested in Florida after British authorities announced that they were seeking the brothers’ extradition on rape and sex trafficking charges.

The brothers were taken into custody on a sealed warrant in Miami on Saturday, July 18, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed to PEOPLE.

British prosecutors announced earlier on Saturday that they were seeking the brothers’ extradition and would be prosecuting them on charges including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offenses involving indecent images of a child.

The incidents were all alleged to have taken place between July 2010 and August 2017, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said in a press release, and they involved four additional victims.

The pair already faced 21 criminal charges, including rape and human trafficking, from the U.K. government, but prosecutors added more than a dozen additional charges on Saturday.

Andrew, 39, is being prosecuted for seven counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and 19 additional charges for offenses relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography, the CPS said on Saturday.

Tristan, 38, is being prosecuted for one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, the agency added.

“These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven,” Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Special Crime Division at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in a statement.

McHaffie confirmed that the Tates had been arrested and said they are awaiting extradition proceedings to the U.K.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and that these defendants have the right to a fair trial,” he added.

The Tate brothers, who are dual U.S.-British citizens from Chicago, are known for a brand of toxic masculinity among their massive social media following in the “manosphere,” a community known for promoting misogyny. They have nearly 15 million followers combined on X.

Their content includes sexist statements, hate speech and over-the-top displays of wealth. Andrew has faced backlash for his statements that women “belong” to men and “bear some responsibility” for being raped, according to The New York Times, as well as claiming that men are the victims of feminism and that there is a conspiracy to subdue men’s success.

Andrew and Tristan were first arrested in Romania in 2022 in connection with an investigation looking into human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women.

Romanian authorities indicted the Tate brothers on the charges in June 2023, placing them on house arrest and confiscating several of their assets.

In December 2024, however, a Romanian appeals court ruled that the human trafficking case against the Tate brothers could not go to trial due to several legal and procedural irregularities by the prosecutors, according to the Associated Press. The case has since been returned to the prosecutors and remains open.

Andrew and Tristan faced additional charges in March 2024 stemming from a U.K. arrest warrant relating to alleged sexual aggression charges. Both of the brothers have denied all of the allegations, according to the BBC.

The pair returned to the U.S. in 2025 and have made a number of public appearances since then.

A November 2025 report from ProPublica also stated that a member of President Donald Trump’s administration intervened on behalf of the brothers when their electronic devices were taken away upon their entry into the U.S. The Trump official told senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) staff to give back the brothers’ devices several days later.

A woman later filed a civil suit against the pair in the U.S., accusing them of coercing her into sex work and defaming her after she spoke with authorities in Romania, the BBC reported.

In October, a judge in Florida dismissed most of the woman’s claims, but allowed the defamation claim to stand, according to The New York Times. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also announced a criminal investigation into the Tate brothers in March.

The brothers’ attorney, Joseph McBride, told AP on Saturday that he has not been able to speak with his clients, but called the new charges “filth and slander” intended to derail other defamation lawsuits filed by the Tates in the U.S.

“They’re pulling out all the stops to make sure these guys never get their day in court,” McBride told the outlet.

“We are confident that once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain’s political dirty work,” he added.
