A pregnant woman was killed in an ATV accident in Georgia — and her family is taking the opportunity to advocate for safety in the wake of the tragedy.

Domunique Kindred, 28, died on June 23 following a crash in Lithonia, Ga., according to her obituary.

Domunique’s sister, Alexis Kindred, told FOX 5 Atlanta that Domunique got on an ATV to drive down a Lithonia street toward her home. While driving the vehicle, Domunique swerved to avoid an oncoming car.

“She got on the ATV, she rode it down the hill, and unfortunately she never came back,” Alexis told the outlet. During the drive, her sister “hit a mailbox, then the parked car next to the mailbox hit it and the ATV flipped over, and she was on the ground lying unconscious.”

Domunique was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Alexis told FOX 5. The 28-year-old was taken to the hospital for her injuries, and she died soon after.

PEOPLE have reached out to local authorities for further information about the crash.

According to Alexis, Domunique was a mom to a 4-month-old baby, Kanan, and a 5-year-old son, Yosiah, and had recently learned that she was pregnant with her third child. She had just graduated from cosmetology school.

Speaking to FOX 5, Alexis described her late sister as being lighthearted and always having a sense of humor.

“She was always goofy, messing around, always made light of every negative situation,” her sister shared.

“She was a beautiful soul who brought laughter, love and joy to everyone she met,” her family added in a GoFundMe set up to help cover Domunique’s funeral and burial expenses.

“Her funny personality, caring heart and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten,” her family continued. “She had a way of making people smile even during difficult times, and her presence lit up every room she entered.”

Following Domunique’s death, her family is advocating for anyone riding off-road vehicles, such as ATVs, to wear a helmet and use other safety precautions, as they believe this would have saved her life.

“If you get on a scooter, ATV, anything like that, wear a helmet,” said her father, Ralph Kindred, who told FOX 5 that he was on his way to spend time with his daughter when the accident occurred — and was bringing her two helmets.

“You don’t know how much that will help your life,” Ralph continued. “She’s gone too soon. Now my baby is gone, no coming back from this.”

“This all could’ve been avoided with a helmet, so to avoid another family going through a tragic thing like this — I mean, this is, like my father said, the worst feeling in the world,” Alexis added.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges ATV and off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders to always wear a helmet and other protective gear, including eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

Riders are also advised not to ride with more passengers than there are seats, to stay off paved roads and to avoid drinking alcohol before operating an ATV or OHV. Riders under the age of 16 are urged to only drive age-appropriate youth models.

“This is the toughest battle a parent has to fight to bury their child. No parent wants to bury their child. This is tough, really tough,” Domunique’s father told FOX 5.

“I had to go in there and give my baby a kiss,” he added. “I had to kiss her goodbye on her forehead. It’s sad that it’s a memory for life now.”
