Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has spent nearly three weeks in the hospital after suffering a medical emergency at his Washington, DC home.
Questions are emerging after newly released emergency dispatch audio revealed first responders were called to McConnell’s home for an unconscious person on the day he was hospitalized.
The New York Post reported that the dispatch communications have suggested the incident may have involved a cardiac emergency.
The 84-year-old was admitted to the hospital on June 14. Still, his office has revealed few details about his condition, saying only that he is ‘continuing to improve’ while staying engaged with Senate business and matters affecting his home state of Kentucky.
According to People, despite remaining in the hospital, aides say the veteran lawmaker has continued to communicate with colleagues and work remotely while the Senate is in recess.
McConnell, who stepped down as Senate Republican leader in early 2025 after a record-breaking tenure, also announced last year that he will not seek reelection in 2026.
His latest health scare follows a string of well-publicized medical incidents in recent years, including multiple falls, a concussion, and several occasions in which he appeared to freeze while speaking at public events, fueling ongoing scrutiny over his health.

A spokesman for McConnell told the Daily Mail the ‘Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff.’
In February, McConnell was hospitalized for about a week due to flu-like symptoms before being discharged to recover at home.
McConnell has had a series of health-related incidents in recent years.
That included multiple falls since 2023 that resulted in injuries and occasional use of a wheelchair.
He also endured brief episodes during public appearances where he appeared to suddenly freeze and be unable to speak for several seconds.
President Trump has said Mitch McConnell is no longer fit to lead Senate Republicans, claiming he has “lost his confidence,” is “not equipped mentally,” and should give way to leaders who fully support Trump’s “America First” agenda. He also claimed credit for McConnell’s decision to step down as Senate Republican leader.
McConnell decided to step down from GOP leadership last year and will not be seeking reelection.
If Mitch McConnell were to resign, Kentucky’s governor would appoint a temporary replacement, followed later by a special election.
In a statement, the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said it was unable to confirm any details about the dispatch recording, citing HIPAA restrictions on releasing personally identifiable health information.
They also said they were unsure how the independent reporter obtained the audio, which may suggest it is authentic.
