Katy Perry forced to halt festival comeback hours before showtime

Katty Perry was set to headline Werchter Boutique at Festivalpark Werchter, her first return to the festival in 17 years, when authorities ordered the event shut down only hours before her set. In an Instagram post, she explained that she was already in hair and makeup backstage when she was informed that the government had mandated a cancellation because of incoming severe weather and crowd safety concerns.

She stressed that the call was not hers to make and that she “had no choice,” emphasizing that the safety of roughly 55,000 ticket holders had to come first. The cancellation came just after Perry’s iconic FIFA World Cup performance and just in the middle of a historic European heat wave that pushed Belgian temperatures into the upper 30s Celsius and contributed to dangerous thunderstorms.

Local officials issued alerts about the forecast, and the festival itself announced that the event would end early, with the night closing after Pitbull’s performance and Perry’s set scrapped so the site could be cleared before the storms hit. Perry told fans she was “just as unhappy” as they were and even revealed she had planned to wear the same outfit she used at Werchter in 2009, underlining how personally meaningful the show was meant to be.

Even as the stage went dark in Belgium, Perry’s latest release was finding a much brighter reception elsewhere.
