One of the most legendary action movies of all time is now free to stream

If there’s one film genre that’s always easy to convince my friends and family to watch on movie night, it’s action. But what makes a great action movie isn’t just its high-octane set pieces. It also needs characters with depth, people you can connect with, and a story that stays with you long after the credits roll.

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of excellent action movies to choose from. There are blockbusters like Top Gun, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Skyfall, and John Wick, as well as classics such as The Longest Day and Seven Samurai.

I’ve watched all of those films more times than I can count and love every one of them. But there’s one action movie that arrived at the turn of the century that’s widely regarded not only as one of the greatest action films ever made, but also one of the finest historical epics. The film I’m talking about is Gladiator.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator was released in 2000 and follows the story of Maximus, a respected Roman general who is betrayed by the new emperor of Rome, Commodus, losing his family, his status, and nearly his life in the process. Forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator, Maximus rises through the arena with a desire to avenge his family and bring justice to Rome.

Gladiator is elevated by its phenomenal cast, featuring Russell Crowe as Maximus, Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus, Oliver Reed as Proximo, and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla.

And fortunately, if you’ve never seen Gladiator, or it’s simply been a while since you last watched it, now is the perfect opportunity to revisit it, as the movie has just been added to this free streaming service.
