An Alabama father was shot and killed in front of his family during an argument at a barbershop.

According to Birmingham police, the incident took place on Saturday, June 13, just after 3:30 p.m. local time on the city's West Valley Avenue outside La Vida Barberia Spa y Estilismo, AL.com and WBRC reported.

Police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade told AL.com that both police and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a man being shot.

Investigators said that they believe the victim and suspect knew each other, and that the two got into a physical altercation outside the barbershop. While they were fighting, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim.

Police on Sunday said they had identified the victim as 34-year-old Birmingham resident Jorge Fonseca.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they attempted lifesaving measures. Fonseca was pronounced dead on the sidewalk outside the shop.

Police said the shooter fled the scene but was taken into custody about 15 minutes later.

Several customers were inside the barbershop when the fatal altercation broke out — including the victim’s family, AL.com reported. Witnesses were brought in for questioning by investigators.

The suspect's identity has not been made public.
