tvOS 27 is making your Apple TV 4K faster, but the biggest feature is missing

Apple just wrapped up its big WWDC 2026 keynote, where it detailed the major software updates coming to iOS, macOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and more. A major focus of this year’s presentation was Siri AI, Apple’s long-delayed upgrade to Siri, enhanced by Apple Intelligence. Apple first showed it off back at WWDC 2024 and finally revealed at WWDC 2026 that it will launch in beta this fall with iOS 27.

Apple is positioning Siri AI as “an entirely new version of Siri,” one you can talk to more conversationally, similar to Google Gemini. It will understand your personal context, answer questions on almost any topic, and help you quickly surface information across your device. However, because so much of WWDC was centered on Siri AI, there wasn’t much for Apple TV fans to get excited about in tvOS 27. The Apple TV 4K remains one of the last major Apple devices without a model that supports Apple Intelligence.

That said, there is still some tvOS 27 news coming out of WWDC 2026, even though the current third-gen Apple TV 4K does not support Apple Intelligence. A developer beta of tvOS 27 has been released, with a few changes worth looking forward to.

Better performance is a focus

According to 9to5Mac, a number of tvOS 27 changes have already been confirmed, with one of the biggest being a redesigned Podcasts app. That’s not exactly surprising, considering how clunky the Podcasts app on Apple TV has been to navigate for a while now. Given how popular podcasts have become, this feels like a long-overdue update.

Another change that anyone who regularly casts content from their iPhone will appreciate is faster AirPlay connections to Apple TV and HomePod. If you frequently use AirPlay to cast shows, movies, or music to your Apple TV, the experience should feel snappier with tvOS 27.

Smart Downloads are also reportedly coming to Apple TV with tvOS 27, though it’s not entirely clear how the feature will work just yet. Typically, smart downloads automatically download content you might want to watch offline. Services like Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video already offer some form of smart or auto downloads, so it’ll be interesting to see how Apple brings the feature to Apple TV.

FlatpanelsHD also reports that several other improvements have been spotted in the tvOS 27 developer beta, including some welcome performance upgrades. Here’s everything that’s surfaced so far:

  • A more responsive control center
  • Up to 30 percent faster app launches
  • The ability to check your AppleCare coverage in the tvOS settings
  • Better game controller settings
  • Hi-Res Lossless audio support in Apple Music

Finally, another feature we know is coming with tvOS 27 is Larger Text, an accessibility feature that increases the size of text in the tvOS interface and on Apple TV.

If you want to download the tvOS 27 developer beta for your Apple TV 4K now, you can sign up to test it on Apple’s website. A public beta is likely to launch this summer, with a full release this fall, possibly in September.

A new Apple TV 4K is reportedly on the way

There’s more to tvOS 27 than meets the eye

With tvOS 27 now officially on the way and Siri AI confirmed to launch this fall in beta, the big question is when Apple plans to release a new Apple TV 4K that can actually support Apple Intelligence.

It’s clear Apple has big ambitions for Siri AI, and with tvOS currently the only major Apple platform without Apple Intelligence support, it feels like a significant piece of tvOS 27 is missing from the developer beta.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple has a new Apple TV set-top box “ready to go” and is simply waiting for its new Siri and Apple Intelligence features to be ready before launching it. Now that Apple has confirmed Siri AI will arrive this fall, it seems increasingly likely that a new Apple TV 4K could follow shortly afterward.

I’m making an educated guess here, but I think there’s almost certainly more to tvOS 27 than what Apple showed off at WWDC 2026, and much of it likely revolves around Siri AI in some capacity. If that’s the case, we may not get a proper look at those features until Apple finally pulls back the curtain on its next-generation Apple TV 4K.

For now, Apple hasn’t officially confirmed that a new Apple TV 4K is on the way, nor has it announced Siri AI features for tvOS 27. We’ll have to wait until the fall to see how it all unfolds.
