Should I Look at the Interviewer’s LinkedIn Profile Even Though They’ll See?

I’ve got two questions today, and the first one is the title of this video that basically asks the question of, should I look at the interviewer’s LinkedIn page, even though they’ll see that I looked at their LinkedIn page? Ooh, the horror. They might see I looked at their LinkedIn page. Oh, terrible, terrible.

Yes, look at their LinkedIn page. By all means, look at their LinkedIn page. Here’s a, a little piece of reality: they’re not checking that all the time. They’re busy. They’ve got other things to do. If they notice that you looked at their LinkedIn page, well, they’ll know that you researched them. That’s a good thing. If they see that you didn’t look at their LinkedIn page, they might think that you didn’t, and that’s not a good thing.

Now, if you’re still nervous, there’s a thing in the privacy features where you can hide who you are, and basically put yourself in the position where you’re seen as being job title at fill-in-the-blank. But that’s going to signal them that it’s you, too. So, there’s really no hiding it. Just go do it and stop worrying about it.

Which leads to the second and related question: do hiring managers look at LinkedIn? And the answer is absolutely. Hiring managers and recruiters look at LinkedIn for a couple of reasons. Number one is it’s a, you know, it gives some texture to a person’s background that sometimes resumes don’t.

I’ll also tell you, people lie, and resumes and LinkedIn profiles aren’t always consistent or congruent. And thus, the lies can be exposed. What kind of lies? Simple: dates. Dates on the resume are different than dates on the profile. Happens all the time. Pretty dumb, isn’t it?

There’s also the thing about where the emphasis on the background is. I remember when I worked in technology recruiting, and, you know, there was a job for a person with one programming language, and the strength was in a different one, but they had a little bit of exposure to it, and they were hiding it in the resume, I could go to LinkedIn and see it very clearly. So, yes, they look at LinkedIn profiles regularly, as well they should.
