Mom, 34, died by suicide after setting herself on fire on peaceful Virginia street – but the blaze also killed her disabled three-year-old daughter

A mother set herself on fire inside a Virginia home, killing herself and her three-year-old disabled daughter, according to police.

Destiny Wilson, 34, poured gasoline on herself and set herself ablaze around 7am on Monday on a quiet street in Hampton, her mother told Fox 8.

After the fire sparked, Wilson’s mother and other family members tried to rush the young mom into a shower to put the flames out, while young daughter, Jamie Lee, was in the front of the home, she recalled.

The flames quickly spread into the room Jamie was in, and became too monstrous to rescue the little girl, who was pronounced dead at the home, Hampton Fire & Rescue said on Tuesday.

Wilson died at the hospital after suffering severe burns.

Her mother said her daughter has a mental illness and was overwhelmed caring for her daughter, who had autism, cerebral palsy, and a disorder that caused her to self-harm, per the outlet.

Wilson and her child were spending the weekend with her mother at the time of their death. Six people were inside the home when the fire started and a 10-year-old was among one of the survivors, according to the report.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they heard people inside and immediately tried to put out the intense inferno, which was controlled by 7.21am.

Larry Spivey, a neighbor who lives right near the residence, told the outlet he watched in horror as emergency crews sped down the street.

‘I had left, and I was coming back, I was at the red light, and I saw all the fire trucks coming down here towards my house,’ Spivey recalled to the outlet.

‘So I came flying down, I saw all the smoke and I got here, and I saw the house behind us, and I was really scared. I didn’t know what to think.’

Wilson’s mother said that her daughter was previously institutionalized and had threatened suicide before.

A candlelight vigil and balloon release will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday in honor of the mother and child, according to a flyer circulating on Facebook.

The fire department shared devastating pictures of the home after the fire as bright yellow caution tape surrounded its perimeter.

Long fire hoses were also seen snaking around the property as firefighters remained at the scene.
