Colter Shaw Digs Deeper His Father’s Past

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from the Season 3 finale of CBS‘ Tracker.

Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) continues to unravel his father’s complicated past in the Season 3 finale of Tracker.

As star and executive producer Hartley previously teased to Deadline, the end of the season provides some answers about Colter’s past, specifically related to his father — but it also leaves audiences with even more questions about what’s to come and whether Colter’s family troubles have really been put to rest.

“I don’t know if it’s a complete resolve, like ‘Everything’s okay, and now I feel better,’ but it’s information that he needed in order for him to move on with his life and go about his business and put that to bed, or at least be at peace with the details, knowing that he has the details, because for so long, he just didn’t have the details,” he said.

The finale serves as the second half of a two-part story that involves Colter and his brother Russell (Jensen Ackles) tracking down more information about the mysterious chrono stasis project that their father was working on before his death. In the penultimate episode, they’d managed to track down some people who knew about the project, which they learned entailed experimentating on gifted children to use their abilities for military operations. By the end of the episode, Colter and Russell are closer than ever to finding answers, but they’ve still got quite an undertaking before they can call this mission a success. Colter is in a tense situation after Danny — a gifted boy who is a test subject in the program and whom Dr. Jukic grew close to — summons more guards his way.

The episode, titled “The Best Ones” picks up back in this lab where kids are being experimented on. We’re introduced to a new character named Lola, who is connected to Danny. He tells Colter he can’t leave without her. Danny also tells them that Lola has precognition, meaning she can see things before they happen, to which Russell says the government has been trying to crack precognition “for decades,” explaining the necessity behind this cruel experiment.

Danny says that Lola has been taken to “the quiet place” for punishment, so the men take Danny to reunite with Dr. Jukic to help him do a remote viewing session of his own to find his friend. They zero in on a power plant about 100 miles away and head there.

Russell is being a bit shady about his part of the mission, and after he and Colter split up he gets himself into some trouble. He meets with his military source again, only this time the source admits he was forced to sell him out, and Russell is met with multiple armed guards who attempt to kill him. Russell makes it out alive, but not unscathed, walking away with a gnarly bullet wound. He calls Reenie to help him track down someone else via a phone he finds on a guard, but he doesn’t want Colter to know.

Meanwhile, Colter goes to the power plant looking for Lola. He manages to help her escape but only after temporarily taking about another new threat: Vickers. He’s a former Delta Force guy who’s now working as a hit man.

Once Lola and Colter are clear of the power plant, they go looking to help Russell. Thanks to Lola’s precognition, they’re able to patch Russell up and hide before Vickers and his crew arrives to try to get the teenager back. After yet another shootout, Colter and Russell prevail. Colter puts Lola, Danny and Dr. Jukic in witness protection and sets off for some relaxation.

He reunites with his friend John Keaton, admitting that he’s finally ready to put his anxiety about his past to bed. Little does he know, that period of relaxation won’t last long, because his brother is about to get himself into trouble again.

Russell has gotten himself back in cahoots with the Horizon Group, after his former boss threatens him with a file about Colter’s dad.

“What’s in that file, what he did to Colter, it’s all true,” he tells Russell, who looks horrified as he reads the file. He’s offered the file in exchange for one taking care of one last problem that needs fixing. So, as the episode ends, Russell is off on yet another high stakes mission that will likely have Colter asking some questions.
