Netflix is apparently about to make one of its biggest international film acquisitions to date. La Bola Negra is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about titles in the marketplace, with increasing buzz around a big deal with the streamer. Industry reports also say the film is expected to be acquired in range of $4-5 million, which would set a record for Netflix for a non-English-language title. Being hailed as Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s marked comeback after nine years, La Bola Negra might be gearing up for streaming success as well.  

The conversation around La Bola Negra has only grown louder since its premiere, with buyers now circling it. 

Netflix leads race for U.S. rights for La Bola Negra

Cannes Palme d’Or favorite La Bola Negra is set to sell to the US in a record domestic deal for a non-English language title, and Netflix has been noted to be highly involved in the bid, as per Deadline. Goodfellas and CAA Media Finance are brokering the deal, which includes a theatrical run over several weeks in addition to awards campaigns. Deadline reported that Elastica will release the film in Spain in October. 

What makes this even more special is that, while they did work together in 2023 for La Mesías, La Bola Negra is the first feature from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi since 2017’s Holy Camp! La Mesías, which world premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival as a non-competitor, is a Movistar Plus+ series. La Bola Negra, on the other hand, had its world premiere at Cannes on Thursday.  

The film, starring Penélope Cruz, kicked off its Cannes run with a 20-minute standing ovation, along with positive reviews. Since then, a handful of domestic buyers have been chasing the project, with Neon, A24, and Mubi also in the race for the U.S. rights. 

“The film is an acknowledgement of what it must have been for men of a dangerous and repressive era to find themselves helplessly drawn to war and other horrors,” The Hollywood Reporter‘s review noted. “Los Javis execute this mighty vision with thrilling technical bravado. Nearly every shot in the film is a carefully composed wonder, either an eye-popping still-life tableau or a breathtaking bit of camera movement, all done up in lush, expensive-looking period detail,” it further said.    

The movie is generating buzz with its emotional storytelling and striking cinematic vision.

The story of La Bola Negra unfolds in three timelines: 1932, 1937, and 2017, narrating the lives of characters whose destinies remain intertwined across the generations. The film is inspired by an unfinished work of the poet Federico García Lorca and deals with memory and the mysterious power of the past. It shows how emotions, decisions, and stories that are never told keep echoing through time.

Set in different periods of Spanish history, the story brings together characters shaped by loss, identity, and personal relationships. platform has ever made in a non-English-language film. The film has
quickly become one of the hottest acquisitions on the market. A Netflix
landing would give La Bola Negra a huge global platform and could also put it in the running as a serious awards-season contender in the coming months.
