Hundreds of students have been moved to a safe location after a bomb threat sparked an emergency evacuation at two high schools in Far North Queensland. 

Police declared an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act at Cairns State High School and Sunnybank State High School on Thursday. 

Students at Sunnybank High School were evacuated as a precaution after a threat was made at 9.26am, the Cairns Post reports. 

Police will investigate whether the incidents at the two schools are linked.

An exclusion zone has been set up between Lake Street, Minnie Street, Grove Street and McLeod Street. 

Residents in those streets have been urged to stay indoors and the public have been advised to avoid the area. 

Parents and carers have been told not to come to the school to pick their children up while the incident is ongoing. 

It’s understood police have searched the majority of the school and found nothing, but have a couple of buildings still to check.

Cairns State High School currently has an enrolment of about 800 students.
