Wayne Rooney reveals why he’s wearing a cast as Man United legend could face surgery after suffering freak accident

England legend Wayne Rooney is wearing a cast after suffering a freak hand injury which could require him to undergo surgery.

The former Manchester United and Everton striker, 40, sported the cast on his left wrist and hand while appearing as a pundit for BBC during Saturday’s FA Cup final, having injured himself during a training drill with Three Lions goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

England’s second highest ever goal-scorer was interviewing Pickford for BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show ahead of the final at Wembley, undertaking a series of goalkeeper drills on Everton’s training ground.

The 40-year-old pundit dived and injured his left hand while attempting to save a penalty from Pickford during the segment and has since been speaking to a surgeon.

Rooney, who has a further consultation with the specialist on Monday, was told he may require an operation.

‘I was in goal with Everton,’ Rooney said while explaining the incident during BBC’s broadcast of the FA Cup final.

‘Look at that for a save,’ he added, as the segment of stopping Pickford’s penalty was aired. ‘I saved that and then hurt my hand, so I’m seeing a surgeon on Monday to see if I need surgery.

‘By the way, for all the newspapers out there, I’ve not got my wedding ring on because my fingers have swollen up. I know they will make a big thing of it!’

His explanation of the incident sparked laughter from fellow FA Cup final pundits Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards as well as BBC host Mark Chapman.

Rooney and Pickford were previously team-mates at Goodison Park towards the end of the England striker’s glittering career.

He joined the Toffees again in 2017 just days prior to Pickford’s arrival at Everton from Sunderland.
