It's the end of the road for one Marshals character.

In the May 10 episode of Marshals, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) lose another of their former Navy SEAL teammates, as Garrett (Riley Green) succumbs to his injuries from a fire.

As his doctor explained, "The damage from the fire meant he wasn't getting enough oxygen into his body. The strain of it all was too much on his heart."

Kayce and Cal stood in shock beside the empty hospital bed.

Kayce noticed that Garrett's phone background was a photo of their time from Afghanistan, to which Cal said they're "brothers forever."

"The best of us don't come home," Kayce said.

Hours before, Cal had divulged a long-kept secret involving Garrett to Kayce. Kayce had blamed Cal, their team leader, for abandoning one of their teammates, Roner (Jay Reeves), during an op in Afghanistan, which led to Roner's death.

Cal finally told Kayce the truth — that Garrett had been the one to wrongly claim that Roner was dead during the mission — which led Cal to issue a fallback order.

Cal had let Kayce and the others blame him for years. "I just thought burying the truth was best for double G, but maybe digging it up gives us three a chance to move forward," Cal said. Those hopes were dashed, though, when they learned of Garrett's death.

Prior to his debut on the show, Green, 37, told PEOPLE that he's "probably more busy now than I ever have been" in his music career, but his acting debut in Marshals "happened really organically."

"It was through Luke Grimes, who's become a real good buddy of mine," Green said. "He's starting his music career and was starting to come to Nashville and doing some co-writing and stuff. I was trying to help him out in that world a little bit with some people that I knew. He was like, 'Man, you should try acting, you know? I think you'd be good at it.'"

Green said "was already kind of putting thought into that" when Grimes, 42, made the suggestion.

"A lot of my music career, other than writing new songs and adding things to a set, there's a lot of monotony of playing the same songs over and over again, showing in and out during a tour," Green continued. "[Acting] is something that's brand new every day."

Tapping into Garrett's emotions was admittedly a challenge. "He'd been through a lot, and had a lot of problems, and that's not the easiest thing to just jump into," Green said. "I certainly think there would have been characters that would have been easier for me to sort of tap into that were more similar to me."

"This guy was somebody that really had a lot of deep emotional problems from things that had happened to him in the past. And when you haven't lived those, you really kind of just rely on feedback from other people in the room."
