$4million in Bitcoin ‘was transferred from ASOS co-founder’s account in the days following his death’

An ASOS tycoon who plunged to his death from an apartment in Thailand has reportedly had nearly $4million taken from his Bitcoin wallet since he died.

Quentin Griffiths, 58, who co-founded the online retail giant, had been living abroad when he fell from his 17th-floor balcony on February 9.

The retail tycoon was being investigated by the Thai police over an alleged £500,000 fraud at the company he ran with his ex-wife, Ploy Kringsinthanakun, 43.

Mr Griffiths, who was from London, had been convicted of fraud last October and sentenced to 18 months in prison but allegedly appealed so that he could remain free under Thai law.

He had been due to have a meeting with his ex-wife’s lawyers last month in an attempt to stay out of prison – but fell to his death in Pattaya, a seaside city south of Bangkok, just two days before.

Since then, the 58-year-old’s body has been repatriated to Dorset, where he is believed to have had family.

On Tuesday it emerged that almost $4million (£2.7million) in bitcoin is reportedly missing from his crypto account.

The sum was transferred from his online account in three separate transactions in the days after he died, according to The Sun.

His oldest son, Joel, 29, reported the alleged theft six weeks after his father’s death and Thai police are currently investigating.

Joel was himself probed in a court hearing on Monday as part of a custody case over children his father had with his second wife Ploy.

He was questioned over how he could have spotted the bitcoin was missing if he did not have access to the wallet.

Ploy’s lawyer Mona Mankong said: ‘The funds were transferred to a mystery location. Nobody knows where they went or who did it.

‘With everything that has happened, it’s very suspicious.

‘How does the complainant know the exact amount that was taken? Does he himself have access to the crypto wallet?’

Members of Mr Griffiths’ family are said to have discovered the money was missing from his crypto wallet after they flew to Thailand to sort out his affairs.

Only someone with access to the wallet would be able to transfer the sum.

The former ASOS boss left behind millions, including his crypto fortune and property in Thailand worth around £2million.

His family is now embroiled in the custody row over his children. Joel has applied for custody so they can be raised in the UK but Ploy says she should keep full custody in Thailand.

They will remain in Thailand while they await a hearing.

An inquest into Mr Griffiths’ death heard his cause of death was from multiple injuries.

He fell from the balcony of the flat where he lived at the Elysium Residences in the Nong Prue subdistrict in Pattaya, Thailand.

Mr Griffiths was arrested at Bangkok airport after a flight from London on January 15 last year, according to the Sun.

He was accused of allegedly falsifying documents to fraudulently remove his ex-wife as director of a firm used to hold property for a family home.

An investigation by Thai authorities indicated there were no suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement in his death.
