A small plane has crashed into a hangar at a South Australian airport, causing a fire.
Police and emergency services were notified of the aircraft colliding with the hangar at Parafield Airport in Adelaide’s north at about 2.10pm on Wednesday.
South Australia police are at the scene near Kings Road and say the plane was attempting to land before the accident.
South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service and South Australian Country Fire Service are also believed to be at the scene.
The immediate area has been evacuated as emergency services deal with the incident.
It is unknown how many passengers were on the plane or whether there have been any casualties.
Thick black smoke is currently covering the area and the public has been advised to avoid the area if possible.
An airport spokesperson said the airport had been closed to all air traffic in a statement.
‘We will provide full support to the emergency services in their response to this incident,’ it said.
An 891 ABC Adelaide listener Ben told the radio station he had a good view of the scene.
‘It looks like a large fire in an aeroplane hangar,’ he said.
‘I’ve seen multiple fire trucks going through — this is probably the fifth one now, and multiple emergency services heading out there. It’s pretty big.
‘You could see the gable in the front doors of the hangar billowing out black smoke, just coming out.’
However, he see he couldn’t see flames, but it was ‘quite large’.
‘You could see some sort of fuel,’ he said.
A Reddit user, who was driving down Kings Road when it happened, said they saw the plane go down and the fireball that followed.
‘I was thinking “wow, that guy’s very low to be attempting a turn that sharp!” and then it just dropped out of the sky and bang,’ he said.
‘Not looking good.’
More to come.
