Every Interviewer

Thursday was a rough day. My wife was in an accident while driving in Maryland, our car was totaled, she is all right (the important thing), and I had to do remote support for her because there was no way I could get to her before she could get a replacement car to continue her drive north.

My Mom was in the hospital at one point with a painful case of shingles. It is often brought out by something stressful. I remember telling her, “You can only do what you can do.” It was helpful to me to remember that while feeling so frustrated in gthe moment.

Integrity in AI Outreach

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In a job market where executive inboxes are besieged by low-grade automation, your ability to signal human authority is your most valuable asset. For a college-educated professional, the risk of using AI is not that it will fail to write; it’s that it will write something that sounds exactly like everyone else. To win, you must pivot from the “efficiency” of AI to the integrity of AI.

The standard “personalized” message (the one that pulls an alma mater or a generic shared connection) is now a digital red flag. It signals that you’re using basic automation to scale mediocrity. To move the needle, you need to use AI to find the strategic gaps in a person’s publicly stated roadmap. If your outreach doesn’t offer a peer-level observation that is synthetically impossible to replicate with a mass-outreach tool, it will be categorized as noise and deleted.

1. The Anti-Bot Protocol: Killing the Uncanny Valley

Executive-level recipients have developed a high-sensitivity filter for “uncanny valley” text.

The Uncanny Valley: Originally a concept in robotics, this refers to the point where an artificial representation looks and acts almost—but not quite—like a human, causing a sense of unease or revulsion in the observer. In written outreach, this happens when a message is grammatically perfect but lacks the idiosyncratic rhythm, specific context, and “soul” of human-to-human communication. If a message is too polished, too enthusiastic, or follows a predictable three-paragraph structure, it’s flagged as synthetic. To maintain integrity, use AI as a research synthesizer, never as your final voice.

  • The Rule of 80/20: Let the machine handle the 80%—the heavy lifting of synthesizing quarterly reports and identifying strategic friction points. You, the person, provide the final 20%: the tonal nuance, the industry “inside joke,” or the reference to a live event that happened this morning.

  • The Fluff Audit: AI defaults to corporate filler. It overuses words like “passionate,” “synergy,” “deep-dive,” and “transformative.” These words tell a hiring manager you have nothing original to contribute.

  • The AI Prompt: “Distill the primary operational concerns from [Executive Name]’s last three interviews into three bullet points. Draft a low-ego, peer-to-peer opening that addresses one of these points. Strictly avoid corporate buzzwords and ‘salesy’ language. Keep the tone clinical and observant.”

The Goal: The recipient should think: “This person has actually done the work and isn’t wasting my time with a pitch.”

2. Defensive Outreach: Compliance as a Leadership Signal

As a high-level individual contributor or executive, your judgment is being evaluated from the first touchpoint. Using AI to scrape private emails or referencing non-public data isn’t just aggressive; it’s a red flag for your professional ethics. In 2026, data hygiene is a core leadership competency.

  • Stick to Public Signals: Use AI to analyze what the person wants the world to see (press releases, public blogs, earnings calls). Referencing a specific point made in a public forum shows respect for professional boundaries while highlighting your attention to detail.

  • The Privacy Guardrail: Avoid AI tools that “predict” personal cell phone numbers or private data. Reaching out on a private channel with a business pitch signals a lack of professional boundaries.

  • The Security Protocol: Never input proprietary data from your current employer into a public AI. Your “Onlyness” should be built on your expertise and public market insights, not on leaked internal metrics.

  • The AI Prompt: “Based only on public SEC filings and the official ‘Newsroom’ page, identify the most recent operational shift at [Company]. Draft an inquiry asking for a peer-level perspective on how this shift impacts [Your Niche Area].”

The Logic: Mentioning a public signal with a unique insight shows strategic depth. Mentioning private data makes you a liability.

3. Closing the Value Loop

High-resolution outreach works because it creates a Value Loop. You use the machine to find a specific, public problem, and you use your unique background to offer a potential solution or a high-level observation.

  • The Strategy: Replace the “coffee chat” (a request for a stranger’s time) with a “context exchange.”

  • The Execution: “I saw your comments on [Industry Shift] in [Publication]. When I navigated [Similar Event] at [Previous Firm], we found that [Specific Insight] was the only real lever for resilience. I’ve mapped out how that might apply to your current roadmap—open to a quick exchange of notes?”

The Bottom Line

AI is a force multiplier for research, but it’s a subtractive force for your “Onlyness” if you let it speak for you. By implementing the Anti-Bot Protocol and respecting Compliance Guardrails, you ensure your outreach is perceived as a high-signal, human-to-human interaction.

In a world of automated noise, the person who demonstrates both high-level intelligence and high-level discretion is the one who gets the meeting.
