New York mayor Zohran Mamdani’s ‘curse’ of the Mets continued on Tuesday night as the team suffered their 12th straight of the loss.
The Mets endured a late implosion against the Minnesota Twins at Citi Field to lose 5-3 and extend their nightmare skid to a historic 12 games – their longest since 2002.
The latest defeat came after the Mets faithful accused Mamdani of cursing the team after meeting their mascots.
Playing in front of a sea of empty seats, the slumping Mets failed to hold on to any scrap of hope of redeeming their season, despite surging into an early lead.
On night when most Mets fans opted to stay at home rather than suffer through more misery on a chilly New York evening, the Mets were in position to end their streak when Nolan McLean retired the first 15 Twins batters.
Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer in the third to give the Mets their biggest lead since April 5, when they beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2.

The New York Mets’ historic losing streak continued with a 12th-straight defeat on Tuesday

Mets faithful have claimed that New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has cursed the team

Since Mamdani was filmed meeting Mr and Mrs Mets this month, the Mets have gone 0-11
However, the Mets’ grasp on their lead began to swiftly unravel in the sixth. Matt Wallner led off the sixth with a single off McLean and Byron Buxton homered with two outs.
New York’s lead entirely evaporated in the seventh when Luke Keaschall tied the game with an RBI single.
Devin Williams struggled once again as the embattled Mets closer allowed a tiebreaking RBI single to Keaschall in the ninth inning with New York ultimately slumping to a late defeat.
At the weekend, fans had pointed to a viral video of Mamdani meeting the team’s mascots, which was captured on the day of their last victory, as the reason for their stunning demise.
The clip, which has racked up almost five million views on X, shows the New York Mayor being embraced by Mr and Mrs Met in what was intended to be a light-hearted stop at Citi Field.
However, Mamdani has managed to see the funny side – even if events are less than amusing in Queens.
After ‘cursing’ the Mets, Mamdani was dubbed Mayor Mambino by the New York Post on Tuesday, a clever play on the ‘Curse of the Bambino’ – a superstitious sports jinx associated with the Boston Red Sox over the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees.
‘There’s a lot of baseball to be played,’ the mayor said at a press conference on Tuesday. ‘I’m still keeping the faith as I know that many Mets fans are across the city.’

The fans who actually showed up at Citi Field on Tuesday night didn’t hide their frustrations
He then joked, ‘I will accept being addressed as Mayor Mambino for the day. I think that this is part and parcel of what it means to be the mayor. You take it in stride.’
When asked if he’ll do anything to help out the team, Mamdani said he will continue to wear his Mets hat in support.
‘I’m going to send all the best wishes to the team,’ he added.
Without the star power of injured Juan Soto, the Mets’ lineup has gone ice-cold, struggling to manufacture runs during the critical stretches of their current 11-game skid.
Manager Carlos Mendoza has found himself in the crosshairs of the Mets faithful, with critics questioning his bullpen management and ability to motivate the roster.
