I’m sure you know Noah Lyles, the world-champion sprinter and Olympic gold medalist.
And the only thing better than one Olympian is two Olympians. So, on April 4, Noah tied the knot with his longtime partner, Jamaican track and field star Junelle Bromfield — or Junelle Lyles, as she’s now known.
The wedding looked beautiful and was very well documented across both Noah and Junelle’s socials. However, there’s one moment from the festivities that’s getting more attention than anything else.
Amongst all the content, the couple recently shared a video of Noah seeing Junelle in her wedding gown for the first time. And while it’s still a very sweet moment, it’s safe to say that Noah’s “first look” reaction left viewers a little divided.
You can watch the full clip here, but to summarize, Noah turns ’round to face his bride, steps back, and hesitates before saying: “Oh, wow, OK. Oh wow, I didn’t think you would go with the princess dress.”
The video is racking up millions of views online, and the commentary is a lot. Many have taken issue with the fact that Noah didn’t immediately give Junelle a compliment, even after she made a point of telling him how nervous she was. Instead, he began talking about how the day was going to be “super fun” and how “good” all the guests looked.
“No one’s expecting him to immediately get on his knees, sob, and say she looks beautiful and he’s the luckiest man ever,” one Reddit user wrote. “[But] his first few sentences were criticism…Even the tone of ‘oh wow’ is not a ‘oh wow you look gorgeous and amazing,’ but ‘oh wow…. It’s a lot…'”
However, others have taken a more open-minded view of the situation, highlighting that “not everyone displays their emotions the same way.”
More broadly, it’s sparked a conversation about social media and how “not all moments should be posted for content” unless you’re prepared for viewers to “pick it apart & assume the worst.”
And now, Junelle has spoken out on the matter, providing critics with some context on what they “did not see” behind the camera.
In a two-minute TikTok video, Junelle explained that she was going through “a lot” on the morning of the wedding, as she’d just learned that a number of her closest friends and family wouldn’t be able to attend due to visa issues. After getting ready, Junelle said she was “overstimulated” and “holding back tears,” so they decided to film the “first look” video with Noah to cheer her up before the ceremony.
So, with this in mind, Junelle said that Noah’s reaction in that moment was “exactly what I needed” because “he tried to make me talk.” “If he did not do that, I probably would’ve been shut off the whole wedding because I was processing so much disappointment, mentally and emotionally,” she explained. “So, what he gave, I truly appreciate.”
She also said Noah’s shocked reaction to the dress stemmed from the fact that she typically opts for more fitted, bodycon styles. “He was surprised that I was in a princess dress,” she said, clarifying that it was something they had already talked about prior to the big day. “He liked it.”
