It is ridiculous that employers, major firms, small firms, it doesn’t matter. It’s ridiculous that you are ghosting job hunters after complaining about job hunters ghosting you.
10 Mistakes Firms Make With Their Hiring Process
I was talking with someone today who had a final interview at a large firm a few weeks ago. I know many firms complain about job hunters or new hires ghosting them. But what do you think you’re doing when you don’t communicate a yay or a nay to an employee or potential hire, I should say?
The answer is you’re ghosting them. What you’re doing is being rude. You’re being ridiculous, in the exact same way that you complain job hunters.
Now, the guy I’m coaching is a decent guy. He’s been there three, four times, maybe five, six people. Told he is on a final. He’s doing great! “Get through this round, you’ve got an offer.” And now you’re ghosting him. Some will call it, “going dark.”But the reality is you’re doing the corporate version of ghosting. What’s the message that you’re saying about how you treat people if they’re on board when you do stuff like that?
It’s really very simple. If you’re going to turn someone down, you send them a quick email. Have a signature file in place that basically says something to the effect of “We were very impressed with your credentials, but I have chosen to go in a different direction. I appreciate you making time with us and in the future, we may reach out to you about other opportunities.”
Simple email lets them know and you’re not ghosting. You’re not being obnoxious. You’re not being rude. What’s so hard about doing that?
