John Fitzgerald, the Dallas Cowboys center who won two Super Bowls with the team in the 1970s, had died at the age of 77.

Fitzgerald played in five Super Bowls during his time with the team. He was a backup in 1972 when the Cowboys beat the Miami Dolphins and was then the starting center when Tom Landry’s team won in 1978 against Denver Broncos.

He died on Tuesday morning, the Cowboys said in a statement where they described him as ‘the foundation’ of Landry’s shotgun offense.

Fitzgerald played 12 seasons for the Cowboys and never had a losing season. He played in nine NFC Championship games and overall, made 19 postseason appearances during his career.

He played football at college for Boston and the Cowboys drafted him in the fourth round in 1970.

Initially, they planned to use him on defense as he had played as both an offensive guard and defensive tackle during his time in Massachusetts.

But he eventually found his position and carved his name alongside the greats to have played as a center in the NFL.
