Dang! People do some righteously dumb things that prove costly and cost them interviews and opportunities.
No Pressure
Eight things, I repeat, eight things that people do that scare off a potential hiring manager. I’m Jeff Allen, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. You know, I’ve seen this happen so many times where people do stuff that cost them dearly, so here are the eight things that people do. I hope you don’t do any of these; if you do, I’ll just simply say, stop it.
The first one is information about drug and alcohol use. 41% of managers indicated that this was a concern of theirs. Number two: an inappropriate photo or information on the candidate’s page. I’m not going to describe inappropriate, I’ll let you figure it out. Number three: poor communication skills, those could be verbal or written. Number four: badmouthing, criticizing, however you want to term it, a former employer or fellow colleagues at a firm. Number five: inaccurate qualifications, like there’s a disconnect between what you say in your resume and what they find out elsewhere. Number six: unprofessional screen names. This is a classic, and we used to see it only in email addresses, but your screen names are also noticed too. Number seven: showing links to criminal behavior. Like, how stupid can you be? And lastly, confidential information about past employers. That last one, I know for years people… well, there was a story I remember years ago where a colleague of mine had someone go on an interview and they wanted to demonstrate their expertise, so they came up with documentation from a computer system they worked on. Page one of what they showed them said “Confidential Information, Not To Be Shared Anywhere,” and this guy brought it to an interview with a competitor.
These are eight things that’ll cause you to get rejected. I hope you don’t do any of them. Again, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. Visit my website at jobsearch.community. I’ve got free content there to help you, plus become an insider, you’ll get access to a lot more, plus coaching from.
