The Elemental House has been remodelled with an extension by London design firm Archmongers. Located in Hackney, the home is defined by its concrete dining room and red steelwork framing. The dwelling was first built in the 70s and renovated for the founder of the studio, Johan Hybschmann, and his wife Anita Freeman. It was important to respect the structural integrity of the home.
Hybschmann explains more on the design to Dezeen, “The concept was simply to fully transform the house for modern living, using as few materials as possible. We also followed our principles of ‘building simpler’, where we design using less surface materials, and we’ve deliberately left the scars of the converted wall sections and exposed the materiality of any new structural element by not covering them up.”
