This weekend is Valentine’s Day and if you’re all booed up, chances are good you’ve probably got some big plans this weekend. But if you’re like me and prefer the comfort of your couch over a crowded restaurant or movie theater, this week has brought two blockbuster movies to Netflix that I can’t wait to watch on the small screen.
Both of these films were massive hits when they were released, but even if you’ve seen them before, being able to put on something familiar while enjoying a quiet evening at home could be a nice way to kick off this holiday weekend. So without further ado, here are my picks for what to watch on Netflix this weekend!
How to Train Your Dragon (2025)
Familiar but still fun
In most circumstances, I am against live-action remakes. I know the Lilo and Stitch Disney live action movie made a billion (with a b!) dollars at the box office, but I found the film to be devoid of the charm that made the animated version such a classic.
However, with the How to Train Your Dragon remake, I actually didn’t mind the live action remake so much. Sure, in my view, the animated version will always be superior, but I was shocked at how much I enjoyed both the films high production value as well as Mason Thames as Hiccup and Gerard Butler’s reprisal of Stoick. This film may not reinvent the wheel, but its the rare live action remake that I feel stands (mostly) shoulder to shoulder with the original, and I’m actually pretty exctied for the sequel, which is set for release next year. Of course, knowing what happens in that film, I’m a little scared too as I’ll probably be a crying mess, but that’s a problem for 2027 me. For now, I am content with immersing myself in the familiar live action world of Berk with last year’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon, and if you’re looking for something warm and cozy to watch this weekend, I can’t think of a better title among this week’s new Netflix additions.
The Black Phone (2021)
A thrilling horror-suspense film with a truly stellar ending
Though the headline holiday this weekend might be Valentine’s Day, it’s also Friday the 13th and if you’d rather watch something on the scarier side, 2021’s The Black Phone is a perfectly pitch-black choice. This film from writer Joe Hill also stars Mason Thames as Finney Blake, a teenage boy who is abducted by a serial kidnapper known as The Grabber, played by Ethan Hawke. Following his abduction, Finney discovers a supernatural phone that allows him to listen to the voices of The Grabber’s past victims. With their help, he just might be the first of The Grabber’s victims to make it out alive.
This film is heavy on the suspense, and is well worth a watch, especially for its final sequence, which is one of my all-time favorite horror movie endings. And if the film leaves you wanting more, the good news is The Black Phone 2 is also available on streaming, though you’ll have to head over to Peacock for that one.
