The AI Trick to Cut Resume Fat
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And I coach people, I help people play the game of their lives and their career and their professions. Excuse the goof this morning.
It’s early. And I’m going to move to play a little bit. I want to use this video to start a new series I’m going to do called 15 minute job search.
And it’s advice that you can do in 15 minutes per day, in order to get yourself ready for job hunting, execute your job search and get the kind of position and salary that you want. 15 minutes is something I think you can block out pretty easily. You can do it on your commute.
You can do it while you’re in the bathroom. There’s a lot that you can do in 15 minutes, if you’re focused. Now, this one I wouldn’t do in the bathroom, but be that as it may.
This is about resume writing. Now, most people write a resume, they sit down, they compile a lot of information, and it’s mediocre at best. So, this is what I’d like you to do each day for one week in 15 minutes.
Number one, if you have an old resume, get it out, bring it up on a computer screen. Number two is make sure the dates are in alignment. Make sure that last date for the most recent job on the old resume has the completion month and year.
And then from there, you work at updating it. Role, responsibilities, accomplishments, if you’re an IT technology utilized, money saved, money earned. Don’t worry about the resume.
Just write it. Just write down role, responsibilities, accomplishments, if you’re an IT technology utilized, how much money you help your firm save or make as a result of your efforts. Now, if you’re in a career where you can’t quantify it, you might speak in terms of how much faster you are than typical.
You know, top 3% of all call center people handling 22% more calls than the typical call center employee. You get where I’m coming from. You quantify what you did.
Help your firm make $2.2 million or save $2.1 million as a result of productivity savings from the system I developed. Just write it down. Don’t worry about appearance for now.
Another Stupid Resume Mistake
Just write it down. Do that for one week, 15 minutes a day. Like I said, if you did, if you tried to write a resume as a full blown document, you procrastinate yourself much more than this.
So just take 15 minutes. Set an alarm on your phone. Just start writing.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be pretty. Just start writing 15 minutes.
When the alarm goes off, stop. Go off and do whatever else you want to do. Do it for one week.
If you want to start tweaking at the end of the week, because there’s nothing more to say, do that. But initially, just work on writing things down. Now, the reason I say that is another great tip, I’m going to give you two of them.
Another great tip that you can do in 15 minutes is send your resume to someone who does this professionally. A professional resume writer is going to want to know all the stuff that you’ve done. Just like I was outlining before, role, responsibilities, accomplishments, money saved, money earned, technology utilized, all this sort of stuff.
You might as well have it ready for them. Now, if you don’t know a resume writer, I’m going to have a couple mentioned in the show notes or in the video notes for this video. But isn’t it a lot less painful than sitting there for hours thinking about everything you’ve done over the course of however long it’s been since you wrote your last resume? Just write it there.
Compile it and outsource it to someone who does it for a living. They know it’s visually attractive. They know what can work.
You don’t. So, outsource it. So, I’m Jeff Altman.
Hope you found this helpful. My website . . . oh, I forgot to mention. And if you still decide to do it yourself, you have all the material there.
You can include it in your resume easily on top of the old information that you found from the old resume.
